How to Refer a Client
Healthcare professionals can refer clients directly to DriveAbility Scotland by completing our referral form on behalf of the client.
Please ensure all referral information provided is accurate.
Consent and Information Sharing
Before submitting a referral, healthcare professionals must ensure that the
client has provided consent for the following:
- Their personal information to be shared with DriveAbility Scotland.
- DriveAbility Scotland to share the assessment outcome and report with the referring healthcare professional.
- They have been informed of the assessment fee of £275.
Referral Fees
Please note that clients referred by healthcare professionals are currently responsible for paying the assessment fee themselves.
Our standard self-referral fee for a driving assessment is:
£275
At present, DriveAbility Scotland are unable to conduct
NHS-funded referrals.
Healthcare professionals should therefore ensure clients are aware of the assessment cost before submitting a referral.
Some clients may be eligible for alternative funded routes, including referrals through the Motability Scheme where applicable. Our administration team will discuss any available funding options with clients during the booking process
Our Assessments
Your assessment will be carried out by our professional assessment team, which includes an occupational therapist and a specialist driving instructor.
Each assessment is tailored to your individual circumstances and typically lasts around two hours.
It usually includes:
- Initial Consultation – We begin with a conversation about your medical history, driving experience, and personal goals. This helps us understand your needs and identify any barriers to independent mobility.
- Off-Road Evaluation – We assess areas such as vision, coordination, reaction times, and cognitive processing to gain a clear understanding of how these factors may influence your driving or vehicle access.
- On-Road Assessment – If appropriate, you’ll drive a dual-controlled vehicle on a structured route. This allows us to observe your skills, awareness, and decision-making in real-world conditions.
- Vehicle Adaptation and Mobility Advice – Based on your needs, we’ll recommend practical solutions such as driving controls, seating modifications, or transfer aids to enable safe and comfortable travel.
- Personalised Recommendations – You’ll receive a clear written report summarising your assessment, including next steps, training options, or guidance on suitable vehicle adaptations.
