Our disability driving assessments in Scotland are ideal for individuals of any age who face physical, cognitive, or medical challenges affecting their driving. 3. Do I need a referral to access your services?
No formal referral is required. You can self-refer by contacting us directly. We also welcome referrals from the DVLA and Motability Scheme professionals. Anyone in Scotland seeking a mobility or medical driving assessment can reach out for help.
4. What happens during a driving assessment?
A standard medical driving assessment includes:
- A consultation covering your medical history
- Cognitive or vision screening (if appropriate)
- A practical driving session using a dual-controlled or adapted vehicle
Our assessments are designed to offer constructive, non-judgmental feedback. There’s no pass or fail; the focus is on helping you drive safely and comfortably.

Yes. Our team offers specialist advice on vehicle adaptations and driving aids to suit a wide range of mobility needs. This includes hand controls, left-foot accelerators, steering aids, and more. We’ll help you identify the right adaptations to improve safety and comfort behind the wheel.
6. Are DriveAbility Scotland’s services part of the NHS?
No. DriveAbility Scotland is an independent, not for profit organisation. While we often work alongside healthcare professionals, we are not part of the NHS and do not take NHS referrals. Our services are open to anyone in Scotland seeking driving support due to medical, cognitive, or mobility concerns.
7. What type of vehicles are used during assessments?
We use a variety of manual and automatic vehicles, many of which are fitted with driving adaptations such as hand controls and steering aids. If you use a wheelchair or mobility device, let us know in advance so we can ensure the right vehicle and access arrangements are in place.
8. Will a driving assessment affect my driving licence?
In most cases, a driving assessment will not directly impact your licence. However, if there are serious concerns about your ability to drive safely, we may be required to inform the DVLA. This is to ensure the safety of both the driver and other road users. If your assessment was arranged through a DVLA referral, a formal report will always be submitted to assist them in making a licensing decision.
