Founded in 2021, DriveAbility Scotland is the only Driving Mobility accredited centre in Scotland and is the only service to actively reach clients in the Highlands and Islands. Now an independent charity, DriveAbility Scotland is moving to enhanced premises to meet growing demand for its services. It will now also be able to manage its Inverness and Aberdeen outreaches more efficiently from these new premises and hopes to develop further outreach to rural communities across Scotland. The new premises have been grant-funded by the Motability Foundation.
DriveAbility Scotland provides clinically led, ‘fitness-to-drive’ and mobility equipment assessments, passenger access assessments and driving school services with adapted vehicles. These services focus on enabling as many people as possible so they can maintain or regain independence with restricted mobility. Clients self-refer or are signposted from the DVLA, Motability, allied health professionals and the Police. The centre has a growing fleet of dual controlled cars with various specialist driving adaptations so clients with disabilities can be assessed, trained and given clinical recommendations regarding the right controls and accessible vehicle for them. DriveAbility Scotland will soon be the only assessment centre in Scotland offering assessments in a drive-fromwheelchair vehicle with hi-tech adaptations.
Andrew Swain, CEO, welcomes delegates to join in the celebrations at the new home of DriveAbility Scotland. He comments: “This event will bring together members of the community, partner organisations and supporters who share our belief that disabled and older people should have the opportunity to travel safely, confidently and independently. The service should be available to residents across Scotland and needs to be accessible locally. We want to share our journey so far, our exciting plans for the future and hear from voices across Scotland who are working to make this vision a reality.”
The event will include:
- Presentations explaining the charity’s story and future plans
- Refreshments and a buffet lunch
- Specialist talks – insights from expert assessors
- Guest presentations – from Police Scotland and other experts in stroke and dementia
- A tour of the facilities, adapted vehicles and latest assessment technology
- An opportunity to meet and connect with staff and trustees
In conclusion Andrew adds: “Our essential services can now expand so we can help more disabled and older people maintain or regain their independent mobility. When you consider the mental health and well-being implications of not being independently mobile, you can fully appreciate why DriveAbility Scotland exists. We have funding support for a finite time and hence continue to seek support for the future. We look forward to sharing this exciting next chapter for us and the disabled people of Scotland.”
