Heather’s Journey Back to Independence

Heather had always cherished the freedom that driving gave her. It wasn’t just about getting from A to B, it was about independence, spontaneity, and the confidence that comes from being in control of your own journey.

Heather had always cherished the freedom that driving gave her. It wasn’t just about getting from A to B, it was about independence, spontaneity, and the confidence that comes from being in control of your own journey.

But after a life-changing medical challenge left her unable to drive, that freedom was suddenly taken away. Heather found herself depending on her daughter, friends, and family just to do everyday tasks. While their support meant everything, she longed for the independence she once had.

“The thing is, it’s only when you’ve lost your independence that you truly value it. You don’t tend to appreciate it when you’re able-bodied, but as soon as it’s gone, you really miss it. Don’t get me wrong my family and friends are amazing, but I want to do it myself.”

Determined to take back control of her life, Heather came to our Westhill centre, where she was welcomed by our dedicated team: Driving Advisor Alex, Occupational Therapist Fiona, and Centre Manager Andrew.

Together, they supported her every step of the way. Heather trialled a range of vehicle adaptations including hand-controlled accelerator and brake systems, as well as steering attachments designed to help her get safely back on the road. Sitting behind the wheel again for the first time was an emotional and empowering moment for her, a powerful reminder of just how far she had come.

“Ever since I was thrown in the deep end, coming to terms with limb loss, I have wanted my independence back. Getting back to driving is a massive part of this.”

At DriveAbility Scotland, our mission is to empower individuals with the confidence, skills, and adaptations they need to drive safely and independently. Heather’s story is a shining example of courage, determination, and the life-changing impact of tailored support.

Her journey reminds us of why we do what we do and why no one should ever have to give up on the freedom of driving.
