Driving Assessments
DriveAbility Scotland – Your journey to personal independence
At DriveAbility Scotland, we provide comprehensive car driving assessments for disabled people and those with medical conditions whose ability to drive may be affected by illness, injury, surgery, or age-related change.
Our assessments are designed to remove barriers and enable safe, confident, and independent driving. Whether you’ve been referred by the DVLA, the Motability Scheme, or have chosen to self-refer, our professional assessment team provides clear, practical guidance tailored to your health, ability, and driving experience.
Our goal is to enable continued mobility through accessible and realistic solutions that match your personal circumstances.

Who Should Book a Driving Assessment?
A driving assessment may benefit you if you:
- Are returning to driving after a medical event, surgery, or injury
- Have been diagnosed with a neurological or medical condition (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, epilepsy)
- Are experiencing reduced mobility, slower reaction times, or visual changes
- Have been advised to undertake an assessment by your GP, DVLA, or another healthcare professional
What to Expect
Your assessment will be carried out by our professional assessment team, which includes an occupational therapist and a specialist driving instructor.
Each assessment is tailored to your individual circumstances and typically lasts around two hours.
It usually includes:
- Initial Consultation – We begin with a conversation about your medical history, driving experience, and personal goals. This helps us understand your needs and identify any barriers to independent mobility.
- Off-Road Evaluation – We assess areas such as vision, coordination, reaction times, and cognitive processing to gain a clear understanding of how these factors may influence your driving or vehicle access.
- On-Road Assessment – If appropriate, you’ll drive a dual-controlled vehicle on a structured route. This allows us to observe your skills, awareness, and decision-making in real-world conditions.
- Vehicle Adaptation and Mobility Advice – Based on your needs, we’ll recommend practical solutions such as driving controls, seating modifications, or transfer aids to enable safe and comfortable travel.
- Personalised Recommendations – You’ll receive a clear written report summarising your assessment, including next steps, training options, or guidance on suitable vehicle adaptations.
Please note that if your assessment was arranged by the DVLA, the report will be sent straight to them. If you’d like a copy, you can request it directly from the DVLA.
Assessing For Safety
Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Our driving assessment is all about making sure you can stay in full control of your car and drive safely alongside other road users. It isn’t a driving test, and we’re not here to judge or criticise your driving style. Our professional assessment team may offer helpful tips or suggestions along the way, but the focus is simply on making sure that any medical condition isn’t affecting your ability to drive safely.
Our professional assessment team are there to support you throughout the process. If you’re feeling nervous or would like to pause for a short break, that’s fine. We’ll take the opportunity to provide some constructive feedback and talk through how the drive is going so far.
Once the assessment is finished, we’ll go over our findings with you and explain any recommendations clearly and supportively. Our aim is to help you feel confident and safe behind the wheel.
