David was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 2004. As his condition progressed, he needed to explore vehicle adaptations that would allow him to continue driving safely and independently. Referred to Driveability Scotland by Motability, he recently attended an assessment at our new facility in Inverness, an experience he describes as life-changing.
For David, having access to an assessment centre in the Highlands made all the difference. “The Inverness outreach facility is a Godsend,” he shared. “I spoke with people in Edinburgh, and they were saying there isn’t enough funding for more centres, so having this one is huge. It will help so many people regain their independence. I’ve already told all my doctors and occupational therapists, and everyone is excited about this opportunity. This will change lives for people in the Highlands.”
During his assessment, David found the driving component particularly valuable. While he faced a small challenge navigating the facility with his wider wheelchair, he noted that the team’s support made all the difference. “It wasn’t even an issue because of how helpful and accommodating they were,” he said.
He also spoke highly of the team’s care and professionalism. “They were incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. I’m still getting used to being out and about in my wheelchair, but I felt reassured every step of the way.”
The impact of the assessment was profound. “Afterward, my endorphins were through the roof. I knew I was finally going to get what I needed, and I can’t put into words how elated I felt knowing my independence was within reach again.”
His advice to anyone considering an assessment at Driveability Scotland’s Inverness facility is simple: “If you have the opportunity, just do it. If you want your independence, don’t hesitate, it’s absolutely worth it.”
David’s story is a powerful reminder of how life changing the right support can be but, as David pointed out, many people in the Highlands faced significant barriers in accessing these vital assessments. With Driveability Scotland’s new outreach facility in Inverness, more people than ever can take the first steps towards regaining their independence without the challenge of having to travel long distances to do so. This service is opening doors for hundreds of individuals, giving them not just mobility, but the freedom and confidence to live life on their own terms.
