‘Back Behind the Wheel’ Robert’s Journey with DriveAbility Scotland

When Robert from Dumfries & Galloway first came to Driveability Scotland, he had one clear goal: to get back on the road and reclaim his independence.

Robert in car

When Robert from Dumfries & Galloway first came to Driveability Scotland, he had one clear goal: to get back on the road and reclaim his independence.

For Robert, driving wasn’t just a convenience, it was a lifeline. Living in a remote rural area, everyday essentials like shopping, medical appointments, and visiting friends all relied on being able to drive. But after an injury forced him to stop driving, his licence was put on hold, and Robert wasn’t sure if returning to the driver’s seat would ever be possible.

That’s when he was referred to Driveability Scotland.

Finding the Right Solutions

During his initial assessment, Robert was unsure whether he would need adaptations. Together, we explored his options, tested equipment, and identified simple but effective solutions to make driving safe and comfortable again.

With a few clever additions like blind spot mirrors and a steering ball, things began to fall into place. We also trialled pedal controls and recommended some extra driving tuition to boost Robert’s confidence on the road.

Overcoming the Challenges

Living in such a rural location posed another hurdle: the nearest specialist driving instructor was over 70 miles away. But Robert’s determination never wavered. He committed to making the journey, putting in focused hours of tuition to rebuild his skills.

Finally, Robert returned to us for a drive in the adapted vehicle. His progress was clear, he handled the car with confidence and ease.

Back on the Road

Thanks to his perseverance and the right adaptations, we were proud to recommend that Robert be allowed back on the road. Today, he’s driving safely and independently once again, with a setup designed around his needs.

At Driveability Scotland, stories like Robert’s inspire us every day. By working together, we help people across Scotland stay mobile, independent, and confident behind the wheel.
